Association between intelligence quotient and the 5HTTLPR polymorphism of human serotonin transporter coding gene
نویسندگان
چکیده
Association between common intelligence quotient (IQ) and S and L alleles of functional 5HTTLPR polymorphism causing respectively low and high expression of human serotonin transporter coding gene was studied in young (19-35 years, 50 men and 76 women) and older (>55 years, 39 men and 43 women) Caucasian subjects. They were students, scientists, technicians and administrative staff of Novosibirsk State Universities and State Research Institutes of Russian Academy of Sciences. Significant effects of genotype and age, but not gender on IQ were revealed. Higher IQ scores were observed in the S/S genotype carriers compared with the L/S (p<0.002) or L/L (p<0.003) genotype carriers. No effect of the genotype x gender or genotype x age interaction was found. Based on this result, we hypothesized an increased frequency of the S allele in highly educated university group compared with control population. To test this hypothesis the distribution of the alleles and genotypes in the above mentioned academic sample and control population of Caucasian subjects from Dovolnoe village, Novosibirsk region (n=83) was compared. The frequencies of the S allele (43.5%) and the S/S genotype (20.5%) in the academic sample were significantly higher than in the controls (28.2%, p=0.023 for the S allele and 10.1%, p=0.011 for the S/S genotype). The results indicate a significant association between IQ scores and the 5HTTLPR polymorphism, the involvement of serotonergic neuromodulation in cognitive functioning and provide further support for the classification of the S allele and the S/S genotype as associated with cognition.

Correlation of serotonin transporter gene polymorphism with temperament in Persian medicine
Background: Despite its effectiveness, there are still many concerns and questions about the principles and therapeutic methods of traditional medicine (TM). In other words, in order to accept TM as a reliable health care system, its proficiency need to be declared through modern scientific research. One of the major determinants of Persian medicine (PM) which is practically utilized in disease...
متن کاملAssociation of STin2 VNTR Polymorphism in the SLC6A4 Gene with Increased Risk of MS Disease
Background: Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a chronic disease of the central nervous system (CNS) that is characterized by inflammation, demyelination and axonal injury. Although the etiology of MS disease is still unknown, many studies suggest that immune system dysfunction plays an important role in the pathogenesis of this disease. The serotonin serves as a mediator between CNS and the immune sys...

Background: An epidemiological study in the USA recently reported that variations in the serotonin transporter gene-linked polymorphic region (5HTTLPR) can influence subjective well-being or happiness; specifically, individuals with long polymorphisms (L-allele carriers), associated with increased serotonin reuptake activity, reported significantly higher levels of life satisfaction compared to...

Background :5HTTLPR polymorphism (5- Hydroxytryptamine transporter linked promoter region polymorphism) is the most widely studied genetic variant in psychiatry. The present study is a modest effort at ascertaining the role of 5HT transporter linked promoter region polymorphism (5HTTLPR) in anxiety and depressive disorders in Kashmir (India). The aim of this study was to examine 5-Hydroxy tryp...
متن کاملAssociation between serotonin transporter gene promoter polymorphism (5HTTLPR) and behavioral responses to tryptophan depletion in healthy women with and without family history of depression.
BACKGROUND Evidence suggests that serotonin transporter gene promoter polymorphism (5HTTLPR)-dependent low transcriptional activity of the human serotonin transporter gene may be a genetic susceptibility factor for depression. We studied the behavioral responses to tryptophan depletion (TD) in healthy women with and without a first-degree family history of depression and examined the relationsh...
